April 14, 2008 - Congratulations to Heather Lummis, drug utilization pharmacist, Capital Health, and Ingrid Sketris, professor at the College of Pharmacy, Dalhousie, for publication of Use of patients' own medications in Canadian hospitals: A national survey in CJHP this month. As well, their earlier article from 2006, titled Systematic review of the use of patients' own medications in acute care institutions has been abstracted for DARE (Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects).
April 9, 2008 - The Dalhousie College of Pharmacy is offering a free Preceptor Development Program for current and prospective preceptors to develop their skills for the Practice Experience Program. The dates are May 15 in Fredericton, NB; June 7 in Cornwall, PE; and June 13 in Halifax, NS. More information...
April 1, 2008 - Dr. Peter Zed, Associate Professor at the College of Pharmacy and clinical coordinator at Capital Health, has recently been appointed to NAPRA's National Drug Scheduling Advisory Committee.

March 26, 2008 - You are invited to the Research Seminar series at the Dalhousie College of Pharmacy in April 22, 2008. The invited speaker is Dr. Susan Fagan, a former Dalhousie graduate, who now practices at the University of Georgia. Her topics are "Blood pressure lowering and vascular protection after acute stroke" and "Investigating stroke treatment: Bedside to bench and back". More Information...
March 7, 2008 - Pat King has asked CSHP to seek interest from a hospital based practitioner who would be interested in being a member of the International Pharmacy Graduate Program group. The multi-member group monitors the formal program for international pharmacists whose goal is to be licensed in Canada. January 21, 2008 - It is with great sadness we report that Sister John Bosco McAskill, long time member of the NS Branch of CSHP, passed away January 11, 2008 in the Bethany Motherhouse, Antigonish. Sister John Bosco received her Certification in Pharmacy from Dalhousie University in 1946 and worked at both St. Martha's Hospital in Antigonish and St. Joseph's Hospital in Glace Bay. She was the recipient of the A.H. Robins Bowl of Hygeia Award in 1975, and also received an Award of Distinction from the NS Government for her work with the NS Community Drug Dependency Program.
January 7, 2008 - Catherine Doherty, Clinical Pharmacy Manager, Geriatric Medicine & Mental Health, Capital Health, has been awarded the 2007-08 CSHP Isabel E. Stauffer Meritorious Service Award. This award will be presented at PPC in Toronto in January 2008 and will recognize Catherine's significant and sustained contributions to CSHP.
Dr. Neil MacKinnon, Associate Professor at the College of Pharmacy, and co-authors, have been awarded the National CSHP Innovation in Safe Medication Practices Award for their paper, entitled, "Development of Canadian Safety Indicators for Medication Use." Congratulations also to Dr. Susan Bowles, Associate Professor at the College of Pharmacy and clinical coordinator at Capital Health, received the National CSHP Pfizer Long-Term Care Award for the submission, "Effect of Concomitant Use of Agents with Anticholinergic Properties on Response to Donepezil in Persons with Alzheimers Disease." These awards will be presented at PPC in Toronto in January 2008.
Dr. Ingrid Sketris, Professor at the Collegeof Pharmacy, Dalhousie University, was one of sixteen recipients of the Annual Women of Excellence Awards sponsored by the Canadian Progress Club Halifax-Cornwallis in November 2007. Dr. Sketris was recognized for her important accomplishments in the category of education.
Dr. Sketris also received the CPhA Centennial Award earlier this year at the Canadian Pharmacists Association Meeting in June 2007. This award acknowledges 100 leaders and builders of CPhA and the profession of Pharmacy in Canada over the past 100 years.
Dr. Susan Bowles, Associate Professor at the College of Pharmacy and clinical coordinator at Capital Health, received the Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists 2007 Professional Service Award at the annual conference in October 2007. This award recognizes her outstanding commitment to patient care.
Dr. Bowles also successfully defended her thesis and graduated with a Master’s in Science from the Community Health and Epidemiology department of Dalhousie University in 2007.
Dr. Neil MacKinnon, Associate Professor at the College of Pharmacy, has received a 2007 Harkness Associate, a fellowship administered by the U.S. Commonwealth Fund and the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation. Dr. MacKinnon is the first Canadian pharmacist ever to receive this award.
Dr. Peter Zed, Associate Professor at the College of Pharmacy and clinical coordinator at Capital Health, received the 2007 CSHP BC Branch Publication Award for the top original research paper published in 2006.
Dr. Kathy Slayter, Assistant Professor at the Department of Medicine, Dalhousie University, and clinical coordinator at Capital Health, was the recipient of the Hospital Preceptor of the Yearaward for 2007.
Congratulations to new CSHP Fellows, Dr. Peter Zed (2006) and Dr. Neil MacKinnon (2007)!
